In
1986, the U.S. Department of Education published What Works: Research
About Teaching and Learning, a report unlike any report it had previously
published. As described by then-Secretary of Education William J.
Bennett, the report was "intended to provide accurate and reliable
information about what works in the education of our children".
However, the
report was never purported to be comprehensive. In fact, it was
designed as a prototype of what could be accomplished if a concerted
attempt was made to synthesize the research in education. In a
preface to the report (U.S. Department of Education, 1986), then-President
Ronald Reagan wrote, "In assembling some of the best available
research for use by the American public, What Works exemplifies
the type of information the Federal government can and should
provide".
This publication
attempts to respond to President Reagans challenge and build
on the foundation established by Secretary Bennetts work.
The purpose of this publication is to provide educators with instructional
strategies that research shows have the greatest likelihood of
positively affecting student learning. The guidance offered in
this manual builds on years of practical experience and efforts
to synthesize the research on teaching by the Mid-continent Research
for Education and Learning (McREL), formerly known as the Mid-continent
Regional Educational Laboratory. This publication is designed
to be used by K-12 classroom teachers, building-level administrators,
and central office administrators. It is offered as a tool to
enhance students achievement in any content area.
